of this week. meanwhile, the nra is losing friends fast. >> there have been 70, 70, episodes of school shootings in the united states, since 1994. >> 54% favor stricter gun control laws. >> do we worry about dropping our kids off at school now? >> i don't know anybody that needs 30 rounds and a clip to go hunting. >> these 30 rounds of ammunition. >> assault magazines, we have got to call them what they are. >> i don't know why, do you need that? we have seen this movie before. >> what is wrong with the congress? >> gun lobbies will say listen we have a score card here. >> the nra pours money into these races. >> you better score an a or we're going to come and defeat you. >> how long can we sustain that action? >> it is the same mentality that drove the grover norquist pledge. >> are we prepared to say we're powerless? >> we can't tolerate this anymore. >> so far republicans have stayed quiet. >> not a time to put americans through more stress. >> john boehner proposed his fiscal cliff plan b. >> plan b. >> i would call it plan befuddled rejected it. >> there is still hope for a large
, the nra, was holding their annual convention a week later in colorado. in denver, colorado, only about a 20-minute drive from where the columbine massacre happened. the nra said they would not cancel their conference because of columbine, but they did scale it down to a one-day event. it had been planned to be a three-day thing. and in response to the tragedy at columbine and the awful coincidence of the nra conference that was being planned for just a few days after the shooting the nra put out a statement in the form of a letter to its members that said, "our spirits must endure this terrible suffering together and so must the freedoms that bring us together. we must stand in unshakeable unity, even in this time of anguish." about a week after that an nra spokesman said it really was "not the most appropriate time and place to debate public policy." so not a good time to talk about policy. that was the nra's response to columbine. fast-forward almost exactly eight years to april 16th, 2007. a student at virginia tech in blacksburg, virginia shoots and kills 32 people before killing h
there in newtown on friday morning. i'll read it to our viewers from the nra. the nra is made up of four million moms and dads, be sons and daughters, and we were shocked, saddened, and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in newtown. out of respect for the families and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for a mourning, prayer and full investigation of thes before commenting. the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure that this never happens. that's the first public statement since the killings here in newtown friday morning. the nra also says it will hold a major news conference this coming friday, december 21st, in washington, d.c. of course, we'll cover that as well. >>> there has been another deadly shooting in colorado. police say four people are dead in a murder-suicide. lisa sylvester is monitoring that. what do you have, lisa? >> wolf, it's a disturbing story of a woman's 911 strategy. it happened in colorado. authorities say as the call for help came in, a dispatcher heard gunshots, a man saying he was going to kill hi
is in its final week. are you ready? ho, ho, ho. >> all right. we want to go straight to the nra news conference which has just started. let's listen in. >> -- to avoid such events in the future. like most americans, we were shocked by what happened. like all americans, we've been discussing all of the various options that are available to protect our children and at this point we would like to share our thinking with you. for that purpose, i'd like to introduce wayne laperriere, our executive vice president. thank you again for being with us and at the end of this conference we will not be taking questions, but next week we will be available to any of you who are interested in talking about these or other issues of interest to you, so contact us, please, at that point. thank you very much. wayne? >> good morning. the national rifle association, 4 million mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters joined the nation in horror, outrage, grief, and ernest prayer for the families of newtown, connecticut. who have suffered such an incomprehensible loss as a result of this unspeakable crime. out
correct and partially wrong. it looks like the nra's proposal is a lot like exactly what happened after 9/11. immediately though grabbed any federal agent they could to throw them on the planes and later on they put together a really poorly implemented program to arm pilots. and not very many volunteered for the program. i can see the reality. look. he is right in some regard. if someone shows up at a school and there is an armed principal and armed guard clearly that is not going to happen it's unseasonable for starters. it is impractical. let alone the safety implications that come out of all of this. did it work in the skies though? >> well, could argue that it is working because there hasn't been an incident but it looks like every time an american aircraft that gets hijacked there hasn't been any air marshals or both planes that have in iad's on board most of them didn't have armed marshals on them and i don't think there were any armed pilots on them either. so, the air marshall program alone is a billion-dollar program. and the armed pilots program is a lot of the pilots believe it
. >> the nra, i would say that they were tone deaf, but it's beyond that. they're just deaf. i mean, they have completely ignored, don't understand, don't grasp how deeply wounded this nation was. >> national correspondent susan candiotti is live in new york. a week after the tragedy and people are still shocked by this senseless crime. now this statement by the nra, which can only be described as extraordinary, the statement that mr. lapierre gave yesterday. why would armed guards in schools -- you know, why would they ever work or how could they ever work? >> well, i mean, that is the debatable question, isn't it. for example, in columbine in 1999 there was an armed guard in that school, and yet those two students were able to kill 13 people at that school. so, you know, all week, miguel, as you know, most americans were waiting to hear what the nra had to say, what thould they talk a adding background checks, a ban on assault weapon, what about restricting the size of ammo clips. but instead we all heard the statement that they made. well, among the opinions we sampled, we of course talked

. florida seem to have a special problem here. we have big following in florida with the nra i can see that. looking at their website you know, and everyone looks at florida as far as concealed weapon permits i think it has tripled over the last few years. i know the nra has over four million members. people want to bear arms. i upt stand that. people want to have concealed weapons now. when i say it is a problem not just the state of florida. i see that as a problem states are operating as individual countries. when you go to europe, you know, the size is around the same but you see each state size is a country in europe. we are operating like a country. each state if colorado wants marijuana then they get it. if florida wants to have guns. was i was growing up i noticed that the federal government stepped in more. the lawmakers were accountable. if you went too mar far in your state the federal government slapped you back a little bit. when president obama came into arizona he got a stern talking to. and he's a chief of the country and he has a finger in his face. we have to have the resp

by the n.r.a. if you think about one town in marlboro, new jersey has adopted now what appears to be a program, they've certainly moved quickly on this, going to permit an armed cop in each of the nine schools starting on january 2nd. >> kelly: they actually launched this prior to the n.r.a., something they were putting in place on the heels of what took place at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. they wanted to do something, the mayor of that town said we will spare no expense, we must take care of our children and why they're putting armed guards in all of their schools, getting back to what the n.r.a. said, the n.r.a. wayne laperriere said the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is to have a good guy with a began and began a lot of talk and controversy out there, and how we should be responding. >> alisyn: it's part of the national dialog, whether that is the best deterrent or other ways to handle it. the mayor marlboro is a town i knew where, monmouth counties where i grew up. it's one of the pretty s and you can't believe there'd be an armed guard, bu
congressman steny hoyer says the n.r.a. misfired. >> i cannot believe those remarks represent anywhere near a significant portion of america. i don't believe, frankly, that they represent necessarily the majority views of responsible members of the national rifle association who want guns to hunt, want guns to protect their home and their house, and yes, our children. >> reporter: i'm getting lots of comments on twitter including this from roger, who says protect the kids, harden the targets. many schools have police presence bad guys will not go where good guys have guns. feel free to weigh in at my page rick leventhal as the debate for guns restrictions. >> kelly: i have a feeling you'll get a lot of feedback. >> reporter: i already am. >> jamie: and the plan to avert the so-called fiscal cliff. house speaker john boehner is putting the ball in the court of the president and the democrats. and time is running out. will they come up with a solution? steve centanni is following this in washington. >> reporter: yeah, the fiscal cliff may be looming, but both sides have put negotiations on
